Abstract
595,362. Seaming. CONTINENTAL CAN CO., Inc. June 23, 1944, No. 12007. Convention date, June 25, 1943. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group VI] While air is being removed from the head space in an open-topped filled container by directing an airdisplacing fluid, e.g. steam, radially inwards over the open top of the container from at least three horizontally arranged ports in equidistant widely spaced relation, the container is lifted to pick up a closure, and the container with the closure thereon is further lifted into co-operative relation with a closure securing means. With the apparatus shown, can end closures are fed over an opening 8 in a stationary centering plate 5 of a singlestation closing machine and, while an open-topped can 9 on a verticallyreciprocable pad 10 is moved through the opening 11 in a centering ring structure to pick up an end closure, steam is directed from the four slots S over the can contents F, and the closure is then attached to the can by the aid of the chuck 14 and the seaming rollers 15.
