Abstract
595,108. Controlling variable-speed gearing. COMPTOIR DES TEXTILES ARTIFICIELS SOC. A.R.L. July 4, 1945, No. 17088. Convention date, June 29, 1944. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group IX] Variable-speed gearing associated with the drive of a machine for cutting artificial staple fibre (see Group IX) comprises an expanding pulley, the diameter of which is controlled by movement of a feeler or other device sensitive to the slackness or tension of a bundle of filaments to be cut. As shown, a feeler 20 rests on a bundle of filaments A, and is sensitive to variations of slackness therein. Movement of feeler 20 causes connecting rod 26 to move plate 28 about shaft 29, so that one of two projections 34, 35 on a plate 28 raises a corresponding pawl 36 or 37 attached to a lever 40 continuously oscillated about shaft 29 by the engagement of roller 41 with cam groove 42. The pawls 36, 37 co-operate with ratchet wheels 30, 31 fast on shaft 29 which is thus rotated intermittently in one direction or the other according to the position of feeler 20. Movement of shaft 29 rotates a threaded shaft 19 controlling the diameter of a conical-cage expanding pulley transmitting drive from a motor to the rotary knives 6 and feed rollers 3, 4 of the cutting machine. Movement of the conical cage in each direction beyond a certain limit may be arranged to operate an automatic cut-out to stop the motor. Feeler 20 may be replaced by a photo-electric device, or by a device sensitive to variations in tension of bundle A, for example a dynamometric feeler comprising two fixed rollers and one movable roller, the latter being spring-loaded.
