592,655. Coating by evaporation of metals. COLBERT, W. H., and WEINRICH, A. R. May 24, 1945, No. 12987. Convention date, April 19, 1944. [Class 82 (ii)] An apparatus for coating different faces of articles by deposition in a vacuum, comprises within a vacuum chamber a number of rotatable supports for the articles, means for thermally evaporating the coating materials and an electric motor to rotate the supports and present different faces of the articles to the source of coating materials without breaking the vacuum. As shown for coating the faces of a prism 18, heaters 14, 15 and 16 are arranged to evaporate silver, magnesium fluoride and magnesium fluoride respectively on to the faces of the prism mounted on a sprocket-wheel 17 which rotates according to the operation of an electric motor 20 controlled by cams as indicated in Fig. 7 (not shown). The first face may be coated by evaporation from heater 14, the motor is then operated to turn the prism through 120 degrees and present the second face to heater 15 and finally the third face to the heater 16. Each sprocket 17 may be fitted with upright supports 17b and have a prism mounted thereon and all the prisms may be coated at the same time. The motor may be made to run continuously and, with the same coating material on each heater, the articles may be rotated continuously during coating.
