Abstract

A hydraulic fluid comprises a solution of a polymer, having a molecular weight of at least 10,000, of an olefine or an ester containing a vinyl group, in liquid esters of monohydric alcohols and dibasic acids, or liquid esters of dihydric alcohols and monobasic or dibasic acids or aliphatic ethers having at least 10 carbon atoms. Suitable acids for the esters are mono- and dicarboxylic acids, phosphoric, phthalic, boric, glycollic, naphthenic, citric and oleic acids; strong mineral acids are unsuitable. A small amount of an oxidation inhibitor may also be used. Preferably from 0.02-100 parts of polymer per 100 parts of liquid are used. Specified polymers are polyisobutene and polymethyl acrylate. Suitable liquids are dibutyl phthalate, dihexyl ether and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and its acetate. The low viscosities of the liquids are increased by the addition of the polymers.
