Abstract

A substantially non-inflammable hydraulic fluid having lubricating and wear-resisting properties comprises a major proportion of a blend of water and an alkylene glycol, 5-40 per cent. by weight of a polyglycol ether of molecular weight greater than 400, and 0.5-2 per cent. of an alkali metal salt of a polycarboxylic acid, which salt is soluble in the blend. The alkylene glycol may be ethylene glycol, while the alkali metal salt may be a sodium, potassium or lithium salt. Polycarboxylic acids mentioned are alkane dicarboxylic acids containing 6-18 or more carbon atoms in the molecule, such as sebacic, adipic and azelaic acids, and dimers or higher polymers of unsaturated fatty acids containing 12-22 carbon atoms in the molecule, particularly dimerized linoleic acid. The hydraulic fluid may also contain auxiliary rust inhibitors and modifying agents. In the examples, hydraulic fluids are described which consist of water, ethylene glycol, the polyglycol ether known under the trade name "Ucon 75H-90,000" (the word "Ucon" is a Registered Trade Mark), and water, ethylene glycol, the polyglycol ether known under the trade name "Emery M-461-R"; (b) the dicarboxylic acid known under the trade name "Rohm and Haas VR-1"; or (c) sebacic acid.
