Abstract

An extreme-pressure lubricant liquid at ordinary room temperatures consists of a mineral oil, a small amount (about 1 per cent) of one or more of the addition agents specified below, and an amount of water of the same order of magnitude by weight as the addition agent. Suitable addition agents are (1) aliphatic or aromatic halogen compounds; (2) aromatic compounds containing one or more OH and/or COOH groups; (3) fatty acids containing not more than 4 C atoms, their substitution products, esters, amides or aldehydes; or (4) non-gaseous organic and inorganic S compounds, inorganic halogen compounds and compounds of metalloids and metals electronegative towards Fe. Examples of such compounds are (1) b , b 1-dichloro-ethyl-ether, trichlorethylene, dichlorbenzene; (2) benzoic acid, phenol; (3) formic, acetic and trichloracetic acids; (4) ammoniacal aqueous AgCl solution, aqueous solutions of Sn2Cl2, (NH4)2S. In an example, a straight mineral oil, Redwood viscosity 40 secs. at 200 DEG F. was given an addition of 1 per cent of b , b 1-dichloroethyl ether and 1 per cent of water to produce improved lubricating effects.
