Abstract

1,047,493. Esters. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Jan. 28, 1964 [Jan. 30, 1963; June 3, 1963 (2)], No. 3650/64. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Esters with molecular weight less than 950, are prepared by reacting a glycol with a dicarboxylic acid (12-14 C between the carboxylic groups) obtained by the polymerization of unsaturated mono-carboxylic acids, and are used as additives to lubricant compositions. Ethylene glycol, 4-oxa-heptane diol-2,6 and propylene, polypropylene and polyethylene glycols are mentioned and dimers of linoleic acid, or polymers of unsaturated fatty acids obtained as a still-residue in the manufacture of sebacic acid by the distillation of castor oil may be used as acids. Examples describe the preparation of esters of dimeric linoleic acid and ethylene, triethylene, neopentyl glycols and 1,4-butane diol, 1,6-hexane diol, and 1,12-dihydroxy octadecane to give oil-soluble esters.
