Abstract

591,904. Hydraulic operation of looms. MORRIS & CO. (KIDDERMINSTER), Ltd., and DUTFIELD, N. F. Nov. 25, 1944, No. 18232. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 142 (i), 142 (ii) and 142 (iii)] Various mechanisms in a loom are each actuated by one or more hydraulic cylinders, each cylinder or group of cylinders having a separate control valve, and the valves being operated by a bank of cams which is itself operated hydraulically. In the carpet loom described, the shedding is performed directly by a number of cylinders, one for each shaft or pair of coupled shafts; the pile cutter is linked mechanically to the slay, which is directly operated by a cylinder; two weft inserting needles are operated by a cylinder, the stroke of which is multiplied by linkage to impart the required stroke to the needles; and a selvage shuttle and a selvage needle are operated by another cylinder. The control valves are operated by linear cam strips mounted in a frame which is reciprocated by a hydraulic cylinder through rack and pinion gearing. The frame carries two cam strips for each valve and is shifted laterally at each end of its stroke, so that one cam strip controls the valve on one stroke and the other strip on the return stroke.
