Abstract

591,852. Protective garments for aviators &c. SPENCER (BANBURY), Ltd. Jan. 8, 1943, No. 430. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1941. [Class 141] A protective garment, particularly for use by aviators when dive bombing, comprises a belt A and right and left stockings B, each of which has an upper portion 10 secured by a seam in the region of the knee to a lower portion 11, Figs. 1 and 4, which is adapted to be closed by a sliding fastener 16 while the upper portion is adjustably tightened by a lacing fastening 19. Each stocking is provided with a strap 21 by which it is secured to a buckle on the belt. Located in a pocket at the back of each stocking, and extending the full length of the same, is a Y-shaped inflatable pad 25, one branch of which is secured in the pocket by a buckle fastening 27 while the other branch is provided with an inflation tube 28 joined to a Y-shaped connection 29. The belt comprises front and rear panels 50, 51, Figs. 1 and 6, provided with lateral tabs 50a, 51a connected by straps and buckles 52, 51b, the lower end of the front section also having depending tabs 53, 54 to which are connected straps 55, 56 adapted to be passed between the legs of the wearer and buckled to the back panel. To the inner face of the front panel are secured cushioning means comprising an inflatable lower section 60, Fig. 7, and an upper sect'on formed by lobes 62, 63 of compressible material, such as foam rubber. Diaphragms are provided to limit the amount of expansion of the section 60, which is adapted to be inflated through a tube 61 connected to a Y-connector 73, Fig. 1, which is coupled by a tube 72 to the Y-connector 29, and by a tube 74 to a three-way valve 75. From this extends a vent tube 76 and a tube 77 leading to a pressure relief valve 78, which is connected by a tube 79 to a source of air pressure through an oil separator 80. Specification 591,850 is referred to.
