591,777. Centrifugal and axialflow compressors. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. July 28, 1944, No. 14468. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1943. [Class 110 (i)] A compressor plant comprises a multi-stage centrifugal compressor with interstage cooling, followed by an uncooled multi-stage axialflow compressor. The pressure reached in the centrifugal compressor is preferably that above which cooling does not offer any advantage for the entire plant. The axial-flow compressor may be mounted on a separate shaft and run at a higher speed than the centrifugal compressor. The latter may be of the doubleflow type. The compressor may supply combustion air to a gas turbine, and an exhaustgas preheater may be employed to heat the air ahead of the turbine. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also mathematical formulµ for determining that value of the pressure reached in the centrifugal compressor above which cooling does not result in increased overall efficiency of the entire plant. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
