Abstract
590,534. Brake mechanism particularly for vehicle propeller shafts. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO. April 4, 1945, No. 8319. Convention date, March 23, 1944. [Class 103 (i)] The shoes 16 of a brake for the propeller shaft 27 of a vehicle are mounted by means of springs 9, 12 on a bracket 8 secured to the fixed face plate 7 of the vehicle motor 6 mounted adjacent to a side member 5 of the vehicle, and enclose a drum 18 secured to the motor shaft 25 and the propeller shaft 27. The shoes are held out of engagement with the drum by springs 45 between their free ends 28, 46 and a lug 44 on a further bracket 42 secured to the face plate 7 and having a channel 47 enclosing lugs 48 on the shoes to retain them in the plane of the drum. A link 30 passing through free ends of the shoes is pivoted at 53 to a bell-crank 52, 54 pivoted at 50 to one shoe while an adjustable nut 39 on the other end abuts on the arm 38 of a bell-crank 36, 38 pivoted to the other shoe at 35 and limited in its clockwise movement by end flange 28 of the shoe. The arm 36 is connected to any known hand brake operating mechanism, while the arm 54 is connected by a link 56 to a piston and cylinder assembly 62, 65, (Fig. 1B), integral with a bracket 64 bolted to a pad 68 welded to the outboard side of the side frame member 5. Thus the brake may be controlled by fluid pressure introduced through a suitable boss 66. The opposite ends of the spring 9, (Fig. 1A), are slotted to receive studs 14 and, the surfaces are serrated to engage correspondingly serrated surfaces on the ends 15 of the brake shoes so that the position of the brake shoes can be adjusted to compensate for wear.
