[Class 40 (ii)] In a gramophone provided with an automatic record-changing mechanism in which the traverse of the pick-up arm is controlled by a cam disc, and in which provision is also made to prolong at will the interval between successive playings, the traverse of the pick-up arm during the delay period is suspended by means of an alternative motion-action provided by the cam-disc. The drawing shows an underside view of the cam disc 1 and links 5 and 4 connected to a spindle 3 on which the pick-up arm rotates. During a normal record-changing operation the lever 12 rests in the position shown by chain-dotted lines. The cam disc 1 revolves counterclockwise, and the pin 8 eventually comes into contact with the inner edge of the lever 12, is moved towards the centre of the cam disc 1 and takes up such a position that the pick-up arm, when lowered by mechanism, not shown, enters the first groove of the record, after which the cam disc 1 comes to rest in the position shown. When the engagement of the pick-up with the record is to be delayed, the rod 18 is moved towards the centre of the cam disc 1 to the position shown by chain-dotted lines, so that when the cam disc 1 revolves, the lever 12 is urged to the position shown by full lines, owing to contact of the pin 14 with the sloping face 20. At each revolution of the cam disc 1 the pin 8 contacts the heel of the lever 12 and moves it back to the position shown by the chain-dotted lines, but the lever 12 is almost immediately returned to the fullline position, owing to further contact of the pin 14 with the sloping surface 20. As the pin 8 therefore receives no motion towards the centre of the cam disc 1, no traverse of the pickup arm will occur until the rod 18 is withdrawn.
