In an automatic gramophone of the kind described in Specifications 909,859 and 909,860, in which the setting down position of the pickup is determined by a pair of feeler members which detect the diameter of the next record to be played and set a sizing stop accordingly, the horizontal movements of the pick-up arm are controlled by an arm 68 which, under the influence of the cycling cam-disc 58 during an automatic cycle, oscillates to a position in which pips 78 on leaf-spring members 77 on the end of arm 68 engage grooves 67 in a plate 62 attached to the pick-up arm spindle, swings the pick-up outwardly, returns it inwardly to an position in which one or other of teeth 64, 65, 66 on the plate 62 engage the sizing stop 79, at which position the pips 78 are forced out of the grooves 67 and the arm 68 swings inwardly out of the path of the plate 62, and remains in that position at the end of the automatic cycle. The vertical movements of the pick-up arm to move the stylus into and out of engagement with the record is effected by a two-armed lever 212 carrying at one end a ramp unit 216 co-operating with a follower 217 on the arm 68 to lift and lower the pick-up to a record on the turntable, or lower and lift the pick-up to the lowest record rotating on the stack, in accordance with the setting of the unit 216, Fig. 7, bringing into alternate, or selected, operative effect an upward or downward sloping surface thereon.
