Abstract
589,450. Aircraft undercarriages. WOOD, R. T. Feb. 16, 1945, No. 3955. [Class 4] In a landing gear embodying oleo or oleopneumatic shock absorber devices the landing wheel stub axle or equivalent member is carried by two or more oleo or oleo-pneumatic telescopic structures disposed with parallel axes in a spat or fairing ; or the telescopic structures may be combined in axially parallel relation with a stressed shell taking bending and torsional stresses. Fig. 3 shows shock-absorber devices for a high-wing monoplane in the axial hub of a spat 10, the lower part of the hub being bored to receive the parts 20, 21 of the shock-absorbers ; the shank of the hub is bored to receive the lower ends of two tubes 26 set in fore-and-aft alignment to reinforce a stressed shell 12 forming a leg retractable about a cross-head 11 pivoted in an aircraft wing to allow the leg and spat to enter into the wing with their outer surfaces conformable to the wing surface. The lower ends of the shockabsorbers are engaged in end recesses of a yoke 19 carrying wheel axle 22. The tubes 26 pass through apertured brackets 29 and are directed to converge to the point of contact of the wheel with the ground. Thrust bearings are provided for the oleo tubes. Fig. 8 shows the spat 40 and leg shell 42 of a landing unit for low wing type aircraft ; the plunger tubes 47 have their lower ends sealed into the shank and their upper ends fitted to a pivoted crosshead 41 at the top of the shell 42. Air lines 51 extend up the plunger tubes from the yoke 53 to stops 55. In a modification the cylinder tubes are intended to carry only fluid pressure loads and the outer shell to take the bending and torsion loads.
