Abstract

589,444. Bolt fastenings ; panic bolts. NEWMAN & SONS, Ltd., W., SHEAD, H. C., and ROLLASON, S. A. Nov. 24, 1944, No. 23431. [Class 44] In door bolt fastenings, particularly panic bolt fastenings, of the kind employing upper and lower bolts operated by a crash-bar or other common actuating device and in which the lower bolt may be held raised when required by an automatic catch leaving the upper bolt free to be operated for securing or releasing the upper edge of the door, the upperbolt is raised by a rigid arm of an operating lever whilst the lower bolt is raised by an independent loose pivoted arm, directly operable by the lever, the arm remaining raised when the lower bolt is held raised without affecting subsequent operations of the lever and upper bolt. In the arrangement shown both bolts are lowered to effect fastening, and raised to effect release. The lower bolt 2 engages a floor socket 7 in the usual way and is held in its raised position by an automatic catch comprising an apertured clutch-plate 27 tiltable about fulcrum 28, the bolt moving freely through the aperture in the upward direction but being gripped by opposite edges of the aperture as the plate tilts to prevent downward movement of the bolt as described in Specification 589,251. The bolt may be released by slightly raising the free edge of the plate 27. The clutch described may be replaced by any other suitable form of clutch or catch. The upper edge of the door is fastened by a pivoted gravity catch 21 mounted on the fixed frame 24 and engaging behind a flange 25 on a guidefitting 6 secured to the door 4 and released by raising the bolt 1 as described in Specification 589,250, Bolt 1 is raised by an arm 11 engaging a lateral recess 12 in the bolt tail-plate 13, arm 11 being rigid with arm 9 of the lever, pivoted at 10, which carries the crush-bar 8. Bolt 1 is retracted by gravity, aided if desired by a spring 15. Bolt 2 is raised by an arm 16 similar to arm 11 but independent and loosely mounted on pivot 10. Arm 16 engages a lateral recess 17 in the bolt tail-plate 18 and has a spur 19 engaging a shoulder 20 on the operating lever so that both bolts are raised simultaneously to free the door, but bolt 2 and with it arm 16 remain raised whilst bolt 1 and arm 11 are free to fall as soon as the crush-bar is released. Normally bolt 1 rests on a fixed stop 14. In the fastening position of bolt 2 shown, arm 16 rests in strut-like manner against an inclined face 30 of recess 17 to prevent the bolt from being raised by pressure applied directly thereto. Both bolts may be released from outside by key or like means engaging and rotating a bush having an arm 31 with pin 33 engaging a recess 34 in the tail-plate 13 of bolt 1.
