Abstract

588,275. Parquet surfaces. VIGERS, F. W. Jan. 6, 1945, No. 578. [Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i)] [Also in Group VIII] Preformed parquet surface units for floors and walls comprise elements adhesively secured to a light backing sheet, e.g., of asbestos cement, and so arranged thereon so as to leave an uncovered marginal area for engagement by a locking strip, the width of the area being substantially half that of the strip, whereby when two units are placed together, the strip is arranged to fill the gap between the adjacent units and cover their marginal areas. As shown, the surface units 6 are adhesively secured to the backing sheet 1, to the underside of which and arranged parallel with one edge thereof are attached the bearer strips 2. These strips are arranged so that their ends 4 project alternately along the transverse edges of the sheet and their ends 5 underlap the sheet by an amount equal to the projection so that when two sheets are aligned the projections 4 abut against the ends 5. Along the sheet edges parallel with the strips, one edge overlaps a strip while at the other edge the strip projects beyond the sheet by an equal amount, so that adjacent sheets can be secured together with the edges of the marginal strips abutting. To this end, the two marginal strips 2 have their abutting edges perpendicular to their faces, the other strips being wedge-shaped with their bases wider than their upper surface for keying in a cement bed. The exposed sheet margin E at the junction of two sheets is covered by a locking strip 8, formed of lengths of wood having the same thickness as the units 6, which are nailed to the juxtaposed sheets. Preferably the units 8 are formed on their underside with a shallow channel running longitudinally of the unit to permit of any slight deviations along the edges of the sheets. The underside of the backing sheet may be treated with tar emulsion and covered with pebbles to form a roughcast surface for keying in the concrete.
