Abstract
587,862. Delivering-materials from hoppers. DU .PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Jan. 24, 1945, No. 1889. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1944. [Class 78(i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A device for feeding granular salt to a molteri electrolyte in an electrolytic cell comprises a pan 13 mounted so as to be responsive to changes in the electrolyte level. and situated beneath a fixed feedhopper 14 containing the salt, the height of the pan being such that for the normal electrolyte level any line drawn from the edge of the pan to the nearest point of the edge of the orifice 15 is at an angle to the longitudinal less than the angle of repose of the graular material, a pile of which 24 is thus formed; when the level falls salt passes through the orifice and falls over the edge of the pan. The pan 13 is preferably a circular horizontal disc, the orifice 15 being also circular and concentric. In the apparatus shown the pan 13 is mounted on a bell 8 loosely mounted within a fixed cylinder 7 surrounded by an open frame 5. Air is introduced into the bell by a tube 19 from supply pipe 22 and fills it escaping at the bottom past serrated edge 11 and baffle 12, the air stream being diverted at the top by baffle 20 so as to carry the granular salt out radially thus preventing formation of a crust at the point of entering the electrolyte. Crust formation is also hindered by provision of a heat-insulated jacket 18 at the top of the cylinder 7. In a modification air is introduced by a pipe terminating below the bottom of the bell. A baffle beneath and separate from the bell may be provided instead of the baffle 12. The bell 8 may be replaced by a closed float. A vertical collar may be placed around one side of the pan, or a chute or other means may be provided to direct the salt fed from the pan to one side only.
