Abstract
587,806. Wind musical instruments. SOMMARUGA, H. Jan. 12, 1945, No. 1052. [Class 88 (ii)] A valve pad of synthetic rubber or like material for use with normal valves of windoperated musical instruments effects compensation for the unevenness of pressure which is likely to occur when the pad is applied to the valve rim to close the. valve, by providing a cushion of air between the valve cap and the rim of the valve aperture. One form of pad comprises two discs 28, 29 separated from each other by two cylindrical walls 30, 31 which enclose an annular cavity 32 and one of which, 30, abuts upon the flange of the valve cap 34. When the pad is applied to the rim 33 (Fig. 4) of a valve aperture, the cavity 32 collapses on the side having maximum pressure and the consequent displacement of air around the cavity expands the cavity to maintain allround contact .with the valve rim, as at 33. Modifications described omit the portion of the discs 28 or 29, or both, which lies inside the wall 31, or the whole of disc 28 ; while a further modification has the cavity 32 (enclosed by rubber walls) mounted on a rigid spool-shaped holder, the discs of which may, if required, be drawn together, preferably by a screw which traverses them. The pad may be fitted to the valve aperture instead of to the cap.
