[Class 39 (i)] The inner surface of the end wall 2 of a cathode-ray tube is concavely curved and carries the fluorescent screen 3. The outer surface substantially flatter without being curved has a radius of curvature at least 50 per cent greater than that of the inner surface. This construction gives strength and improves picture contrast by causing internal reflections of light in the glass to spread away from their sources. The end wall may be formed separately with an upstanding rim tapered for later sealing to the rest of the envelope 7.
