Abstract
A pig iron consisting of an agglomerate of cast iron and particles of carbonaceous material is produced by charging carbonaceous materials, e.g., coke, of 7/8 -1 inch cube size into a rotating inclined cylindrical vessel, for example, as described in Specification 536,003, [Group XXII], having a closed bottom and then pouring molten pig or cast iron on to the rolling carbonaceous particles, the temperature of the contents of the vessel being kept down by directing a water spray thereon and the rate of pouring of the molten iron being so adjusted that it solidifies rapidly round the particles of carbon thus producing lumps of cast iron with carbonaceous particles entrapped inside. Instead of coke, graphite, anthracite or bye-products of other industries such as broken electrodes may be used. The iron produced is suitable for the manufacture of steel in the open hearth furnace.
