Abstract
A method of continuously-treating iron-containing material in liquid or fine grained form comprises charging such material into a crucible, kiln or other vessel rotating at high speed about its vertical axis and having a central aperture at the bottom whereby the surface of the material in vertical section is given the general form of a parabola, introducing a gas into the vessel and discharging the vessel through the bottom aperture. The vessel may be heated and its inner surface may be of generally paraboloidal shape. It may be charged with pig iron with or without slag-forming and cooling substances, and steel discharged, or the charge may be finely divided iron ore and coke, pig iron or steel being discharged. By controlling the speed of rotation, tapping may be prevented or made selective of two liquid phases.
