Abstract

PURPOSE: To economically produce ferronickel at a low cost, in reductively refining nickel oxide ore, by using nickel matte in company with carbonaceous material.
CONSTITUTION: When nickel oxide ore is reductively refined with a preheating kiln and an electric refining furnace, nickel matte in compary with the ore and carbonaceous material is charged into at least one of the electric refining furnace and the preheating kiln. Slag formed by this method is improved in its desulfurizing ability, as compared with slag formed by a conventional Elchem method, so that the nickel matte having high sulfur content can be economically treated in large quantities. In addition, ferronickel having high nickel content can be obtained, because nickel matte having high nickel content can be conjunctly used. The product can be effectively used as raw material for a high-nickel stainless steel.
