Abstract
PURPOSE: To refine stainless steel at low cost, which is not saturated with carbon, in good yield of Cr, by charging an electric arc furnace with steel scrap at the bottom and peripheral wall, and by charging the furnace with semi-reduced Cr pellet, coke, and lime, then by melting these raw materials.
CONSTITUTION: Steel scrap 3 is charged to spread all over the bottom and the peripheral wall of an electric arc furnace 1, and coke 5, lime 6, and semi-reduced Cr pellet 7 are charged to the central space and is mixed suitably. Some scrap 4 is placed on the top of the pellet 7 and an electric circuit is formed between the scrap and the electrode 2. The raw materials are melted by energizing the circuit after the raw materials are charged, then the slagging and melting of the pellets 7, the reduction of Cr, Fe with coke 5, formation and settling of carbide are effected, and the scrap 3 begins to melt molten slag 9 floating on the molten steel 8, and residual coke 5 floats on the slag 9. Because the molten steel comes into contact with the coke 5 through slag 9, it is hardly saturated with C.
