Abstract
PURPOSE: To make refining stainless steel possible with less burnden of equipment costs and usage of electric power by transferring the middle-C and high-chromium molten metal obtd. by melting the solid raw materials contg. high-C ferrochromium in an oxidative atmosphere in a converter into an electric heating and holding furnace, and melting solid metallic raw materials therein while heating this molten metal.
CONSTITUTION: Charging raw materials 6 consisting of high carbon ferrochromium and carbonaceous solids such as coke powder preheated by high temp. waste gases in a packed tank 5 are supplied with a rotary kiln 4 into a converter-like reaction vessel 1. While O2 is supplied from the furnce bottom, the raw materials 6 are melted by a prescribed amt. and an Si alloy and lime are added to the reduction and recovering of the oxidized Cr content and desulfurization are accomplished. The prescribed amt. thereof is tapped into a ladle and slag is discharged. Next, the resultant middle-carbon high chromium molten metal in the ladle is supplied 11 to an electric type heating and holding furnace shown in the figure, where it is heated to prescribed temp. by an inductor 12. Next, solid metallic raw materials such as scraps and ferronickel are charged 13 into the molten metal is this state, and the resultant stainless steel is tapped through a molten metal tap hole 16.
