Abstract
587,289. Stoppers &c. WEISS, H. Sept 26, 1944, No. 18374. [Class 125 (iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] A circular, elliptical, rectangular or other closure for a container comprises a flexible sealing ring 4, inner and outer pressure elements 2, 3 on two sides of the ring, and means for alternatively pressing the pressure elements together or releasing them apart, the pressure elements when pressed together deforming the ring and forcing its outer periphery into sealing relation against the inner periphery of the container mouth so that the container is closed and sealed, and means by which, in response to the operation of the means for releasing the pressure elements, the seal is broken other than at the sealing ring. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the plates forming the pressure elements 2, 3 are pressed together by a nut 11 engaging a threaded part 9 on the lower plate 2. To enable easy breaking of the seal, holes 12, 14 of small bore are provided in the post 9 and nut 11. The latter contains a rubber pad 13 which seals the hole 12 when the nut is screwed down and is lifted to open the hole when the nut is unscrewed. The pad 13 may be replaced by a rubber ball 20, Fig. 11, which, in the intermediate position shown, will act as a temporary non-return valve after reduction of pressure in the container. The edges of the plates 2, 3 may be bevelled, and a shoulder such as 7 may-be provided on either or each of the plates to locate the ring. The crosssection of the sealing ring may be rectangular, with or without a V-shaped recess on its inner surface, or circular. The inner surface of the mouth of the container may be smooth or annularly ribbed, or, if the sealing ring is circular in cross-section, may have an annular groove to receive the ring when it is compressed. The closure may be located in the mouth of the container by providing on the upper plate 3 an extension 8 which seats on the upper edge of the container or on a second sealing ring thereon, or by providing within the mouth of the container a shoulder on which the lower plate 2 seats. In the form shown in Fig. 13, the plates are pressed together by a forked lever 22 pivoting on a flat-sided post 9a on the lower plate, the lower ends of the lever being formed as cams 25. The post 9a has a bore 21a closed by a pad 13a in the crutch of the forked lever when the latter is in the position in which the sealing ring is compressed. A bottle stopper, Fig. 14, comprises a sealing ring made in two parts 4a held between a nut 26 and the head of a bolt 9. According to the Provisional Specification, the edge of the lower plate 2 is bevelled on the upper side and the edge of the upper plate 3 is square or rounded. The bottom of the post 9 may be coned, and the central hole in the upper plate may be similarly shaped. The two branches of the forked lever 22 are formed as eccentrically pivoted circular discs.
