587,251. Hand sewing tools. OGBURN, H. H. Oct. 24, 1944, No. 20572. [Class 112] [Also in Group VI] A surgical suturing appliance consists of a pair of forceps formed with pivoted arms 10, 11 and having mounted on one of the arms a holder 15 for a rotatable suture bobbin, a fingeroperable brake mechanism controlling the release of the suture to the needle being provided. The barrel 18 connecting the end plates of th bobbin 17, Fig. 5, is formed with a clip 19 engaging one end of the suture coil 20, the other end passing through aperture 22 in the bobbin holder and being normally gripped by the end 26 of pivoted brake arm 25. Release of the suture is effected by finger pressure on the part 30 against the action of spring 33. A pivoted cover 34 is provided. The suture passes through opening 38 in arm 11 to hole 42 in jaw 12, and thence along a groove formed in the convex side of a curved needle 44 to the needle. eye 45. When the instrument is not in use, the end of the suture 49 is held taut by clip 50. The lips of holes 38, 42 against which the suture bears are smoothly curved. A suture cutter 52, Fig. 12, is fixed to arm 11. A forceps latching device 46 is provided.
