Abstract

559,219. Surgical needles. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). Aug. 6, 1942, No. 10979. [Class 112] [Also in Group VI] A suturing needle has an octagonal or other symmetrical polygonal shank 12 so that it can be secured in its holder in any of a number of angular positions. The shank is passed through a transverse hole in a bolt 15 and is clamped against V-shaped slots 10, 11 in a casing 1 by means of a screwed head 19. The casing has a half-circle of wire 23 which forms a stop for the shank of the needle and provides a thread guide on each side of,it. A spool case 5 is integral with a bracket 4. The spool 6 is mounted on a spindle 24 which is pressed to the left by a spring 28. In this position a screw head 31 enters one of the holes in the spool flange and locks the spool from rotation. Finger pressure on the head 27 moves the spindle 24 to the right and releases the spool. In modifications the thread guides are a pair of open eyes and a pair of short tubes.
