587,225. Ingot moulds; casting processes. WILLIAMS, J. H. V., and WILLIAMS, W. S. Dec. 29, 1944, No. 26059. Drawings to Specification. [Class 83 (i)] The formation of scale on the internal faces of ingot moulds, when casting them, is prevented by keeping the poured metal hot, at points adjacent to possible segregation formations, by blowing air into the mould as described in Specification 523,965 but at such pressure, e.g. 20 lbs. per square inch, and for such time as will allow the impure metal to drain away. In casting a rectangular closedend mould a pool of molten metal, covering the area of the four corners, is maintained at the top of the casting to receive the impure metal, by apparatus similar to that used in the prior Specification except that riser heads are deeper and are, in larger moulds, located over pipes of impure metal and, in smaller moulds, located where they will ensure circulation of metal over such pipes. In casting open or closed cylindrical moulds the core is preferably slightly eccentric to localize the impure metal. In casting open-ended rectangular moulds an air jet and a riser head are arranged at each corner.
