Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a sound killed steel ingot of small concentration and area of head part segregation by shutting off the inverse V segregation occuring area and the part inner than this area of the molten steel in a mold by means of an annular partition wall.
CONSTITUTION: An annular partition wall 12 which shuts off the inverse V segregation occuring area of molten steel and the part inner than this area is provided in a mold 10 of a top wide mold or the like placed on a molding board 11, before or after pouring of molten steel. As a result, there is no supply of the molten steel of a high concentration in the head part of the molten steel in the mold in the process of occuring of an inverse V segregation phenomenon near the inside surface of the mold 10, and the head part segregation of the steel ingot body decreases considerably. The cast ingot end part on the outer side of the partition wall 12 is cut off in the state of the steel ingot or up to the final stage of plate working. A good product yield of the sound killed steel ingot is obtained by this method.
