Abstract

586,659. Projectile fuzes. SCHERMULY, C. D., SCHERMULY, A. J., and SCHERMULY, C. Nov. 13, 1944, No. 22339. [Class 9 (i)] In a fuze of the type which is armed by a wind-vane device, the striker 10 and the bore 4 in which it slides are made of similar non- circular (e.g. hexagonal or square) cross-section to prevent the striker from rotating. The wind vanes 16 are attached to a cap 15 releasably screwed to the striker by a stud 14. The striker is retained in the bore 4 by a split spring ring 12 or by a flange at the top of the bore. A crushable tube 24, or a light spring, prevents firing before impact. A removable safety-pin 21, passing through aligned holes in the cap 15, body portion 1, and striker 10, and held by a clip 23, may be provided. The outer part of the body portion 1 may be of plastic material'with a metallic sleeve moulded therein. The fuze is screwed into the nose or rear of a shell, bomb, smoke float or the like by means of the screw-threaded portion 2.
