Abstract

<PICT:0586636/III/1> A column in which down-flowing liquid is treated at high or low temperatures in countercurrent with gas or vapour to effect mass transfer, e.g., in a process of scrubbing gases, distillation or rectification of mixed vapours or chemical reaction, is thermally protected by contact of its outer surface with the liquid and/or gas at about the temperature of the upper end of the reaction zone. Baffles may constrain the path of the liquid over the outer surface, e.g., to a helical path, or the fluid may pass through a helical conduit wound round the wall. The reaction may take place in a number of columns 20 each separately supplied with liquid from a header 26 and surrounded by a stream of the vapour from the top through a pipe 32, and each containing a contact mass 21.
