Abstract

<PICT:0486298/III/1> <PICT:0486298/III/2> Apparatus for carrying out reactions between gases or vapours and organic compounds which are liquid at the reaction temperature comprises a vertical tube having a constricted portion, an overflow at the upper end of the constricted portion down which the liquid reactant passes, and an inlet tube for the gas or vapour having an upwardly directed capillary opening arranged in the constricted portion. As shown, the liquid parent material is evaporated in a vessel 1, the vapours ascending a column 2 at the head of which is a dephlegmator 3, and condensing in condenser 4. The condensate is collected in a Woolff's bottle 5, and flows through a tower 6 containing a catalyst, and an overflow 7 into a vertical tube 8. At the lower part of the tube, there is arranged an overflow 13, Fig. 2, by means of which the liquid is conducted as a uniformly distributed film into a constricted portion 9 of the tube. The gaseous reaction material is blown in through a capillary tube 10. The reaction product and excess of the parent material flow to the vessel 1 through siphon 11. Gasses evolved during the reaction escape through cooling device 12. The tube 8 may be provided with heating or cooling devices. The tube 9 may be made of suitable glass so that its interior may be irradiated by active light. The diameter of the capillary may be 1 mm., and that of the tube 9 not more than 150 mm. The process may be carried out at ordinary, elevated or reduced pressure. The apparatus may be used for the halogenation of organic liquids by the process disclosed in Specification 483,823, for example, for the chlorination of benzene.ALSO:<PICT:0486298/IV/1> <PICT:0486298/IV/2> Apparatus for carrying out reactions between gases or vapours and organic compounds which are liquid at the reaction temperature comprises a vertical tube having a constricted portion, an overflow at the upper end of the constricted portion down which the liquid reactant passes, and an inlet tube for the gas or vapour having an upwardly directed capillary opening arranged in the constricted portion.
