Abstract

<PICT:0695595/III/1> Liquids such as aqueous sulphuric acid and sulphite lye are evaporated by causing a film of the liquid to flow down the inner surface of a tube, and exposing the falling film to thermal radiation from a heated tube disposed co-axially inside the film-supporting tube. The evaporation may be effected under reduced pressure. Dilute sulphuric acid (70 per cent) is introduced through pipe 1 into vessel 2. The acid weirs over serrated edge 3 and forms a downflowing film on the inner surface of tube 4, which is made of ferrosilicon and is thermally insulated. Inside and co-axial with tube 4 is a steel tube 8 maintained at a temperature of about 550 DEG C by gas-burner 9. A helix 10, the height of which can be adjusted, is provided in the interior of radiator 8. This helix improves the distribution of the combustion gases, takes up heat from the gases and transmits the same to radiator 8. Concentrated sulphuric acid (94 per cent) collects in water-cooled trough 6, and is removed through overflow 7. The evaporation may be carried out under a pressure of 30 mm. Hg by condensing the vapours in a barometric condenser, and withdrawing the concentrated acid from the apparatus through a vacuum trap. If the evaporation is effected at 30 mm. Hg, the radiator temperature may be reduced to 350 DEG C.
