585,725. Catamenial appliances. BURGESS, A. F. (International Cellucotton Products Co.). Aug. 21. 1944, No. 15919. [Class 81 (ii)] A sanitary napkin comprises a pervious wrapper 12 and a pad body including a pair of units 22, 23 each comprising a number of plies of creped tissue paper disposed on opposite sides of a central body of loosely felted cellulose fibres, e.g., wood pulp (fluff) contained within a tissue paper wrapper 20. An absorption equalizer element 16 is disposed between the layers of the central body, and consists (Fig. 5) of a layer 17 of fluff and plies 18 of creped tissue paper, preferably rosin-sized, the element being compressed along narrow zones 19. The element may alternatively consist wholly of plies of creped tissue paper, preferably rosin-sized. The central pad may be formed by wrapping strips of its various elements, and severing sections from the assembled strips. In a modified construction, the central pad comprises two absorption equalizer elements disposed each on the outside surface of an inner unit consisting of two layers of fluff separated by a.ply of creped tissue paper. The ends of units 22, 23 may be pressed together as in Specification 390,461, and their surfaces covered with crepe tissue paper-backed cotton webs 24, 25. Composite edge strips 11 are provided.
