[Class 75 (iii)] A pyrophoric pocket lighter is provided with a pivoted cover 7 which can be pressed to operate the friction wheel mechanism, and a pivoted spring catch 17 which delays movement of the cover until the applied pressure is sufficient to release the catch and give rapid and immediate movement to the mechanism. A U-shaped bracket 9 is fixed to the top of the casing 3, and supports two pins 11 which pass into a spindle 12 a friction wheel 6 and ratchet wheel 13 being secured to the spindle. A carrier frame 10, pivoted on the spindle 12, is fixed to the cover 7 by a screw 25, and bears against a spring pressed pawl 14 which engages with the ratchet wheel. The spring catch 17 is pivoted to the frame 10 and urged against the end of the cover by a compressed spring 19. The lip 21 in the catch engages with a projection 16 on the wick tube, holding the lid closed until sufficient pressure on the end 15 of the cover forces back the catch against pressure of spring 19 and allows the cover to pivot on the spindle 12, so operating the friction wheel. The lip 21 of the catch is curved to allow movement without interference from the top of the casing. The carrier 10 also carries an extinguisher cap 8 which is mounted on a spring so that it fits tightly over the wick tube. The carrier 10 bearing the spring catch, extinguisher cap and pawl forms a replaceable unit. The projection 16 may be a lug on the casing.
