Abstract
585,334. Gas turbines. GRIFFITH, A. A. May 14, 1941, No. 6209. [Class 110 (iii)] In a gas turbine, air, which is taken from the delivery of the air-compressor for supplying to end-thrust balancing devices and, for use as a cooling medium, to bearings &c. is cooled by heat interchange with the fuel oil. A heatexchanger is located in the space between the diaphragm 28 and a cover 27. Air from the compressor delivery enters by ports 30 and after traversing the heat-exchanger passes into the hollow shaft 10 for distribution. Fuel oil passes along a pipe 24 within the hollow shaft and enters the exchanger through ports 32, leaving it by passages 33 on its way to the burner. The heat-exchanger is made up of a number of nested cylinders and, in an alternative, of a number of associated discs. As the fuel oil and the circulating air are at the same pressure, light constructions may be used. Specifications 585,330 and 585,332 are referred to.
