870,091. Refrigerating. SULZER FRERES S.A. June 2, 1958 [June 7, 1957], No. 17588/58. Class 29 [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIV] Gas, e.g. hydrogen or helium, is cooled by expansion in a turbine 1 driving through shaft 3 a compressor 4 the exhaust of which passes through a nozzle 30 and a water-cooled heat exchanger 31, the cooled gas then returning directly to compressor 4 through pipe 29. The gas in the compressor cycle may also be hydrogen or helium. The size of nozzle 30 may be controlled by the temperature of the refrigerated space so as to vary the load on the turbine and so maintain the temperature of the space constant. As shown shaft 3 is provided with gas-lubricated bearings 7, 8 supplied with gas through pipes 9, 11, 12 from the supply pipe 25 of the turbine, gas flowing from bearing collector chambers 16, 17, 21 through pipes 18, 19, 22, 23 to the turbine exhaust 24. Between the cold and warm ends of shaft 3 is disposed a labyrinth seal 14 and some gas flows to a chamber 13 near the warm end of the seal through pipe 15. Pipe 15 causes the pressure at the turbine inlet to equal that at the compressor exhaust. In a modification, lubricating gas is supplied by a pump from the compressor cycle to the shaft bearings, make-up gas being admitted to the cycle through an automatic regulator.
