Abstract

Trifluorochloroethylene and acrylonitrile are copolymerized in the presence of ultra-violet light or a peroxygen compound, e.g. benzoyl peroxide. The process may be carried out in bulk, in a solvent such as acetone or in emulsion using as emulsifying agent a higher alcohol sulphate, an alkyl aryl sulphonate or a sulphonated long chain alkyl ester of an aliphatic carboxylic acid. The product is infusible and insoluble. In an example the monomers, together with a mixture of lead tetraethyl and benzoyl peroxide are introduced at -70 DEG C. into a vessel transparent to ultra-violet light which is then sealed to maintain the monomers liquid at room temperature, and exposed to ultra-violet light. The copolymers may be used as fillers or abrasives in tooth powders and pastes or may be hydrolysed as described in Specification 351,508.
