Abstract

Trifluorochloroethylene is polymerized in the presence of ultra-violet light and/or a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide at a temperature not exceeding 45 DEG C. Polymerization may be effected in bulk, in solution in acetone or in aqueous emulsion made with the aid of aryl sulphonates, higher fatty alcohol sulphates or sulphonated higher alkyl diesters of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. In the example, the monomer and a mixture of lead tetraethyl and benzoyl peroxide are introduced into a vessel transparent to ultra-violet light under pressure to maintain the monomer liquid. On exposure to ultra-violet light, an insoluble white powder softening at 215 DEG C. is formed. Fillers, pigments and other resins may be added to the polymer which may be extruded into filaments at 200 DEG to 225 DEG C. which may be hot-stretched to increase their strength and flexibility.
