Abstract
Di-acyl peroxides of the general formula R.CO.O.O.CO.R1, wherein R and R1 differ from one another but are both radicals selected from alkyl, cyclo-alkyl, alkyl-substituted cyclo-alkyl and cyclo-alkyl substituted alkyl groups, are prepared by reacting the per-acid derived from an acid R.COOH with the anhydride or halide of an acid R1.COOH. In examples, (1) perlauric acid is reacted with acetic anhydride, or, in the presence of pyridine, with isobutyryl chloride, 2-ethyl hexanoyl chloride or pivalyl chloride; (2) caprylyl chloride is reacted with a slurry comprising peracetic acid, excess sodium carbonate, water and mineral oil; the purification of the resulting diacyl peroxides is described. Other di-acyl peroxides are mentioned including methylcyclohexyl carbonyl lauroyl peroxide and cyclopropylacetyl lauroyl peroxide. Perlauric acid is prepared by reacting lauric acid with H2O2 in ice-chilled sulphuric acid. The di-acyl peroxides may be used as initiators of the polymerization of ethylene (as described in Specification 901,040 [Group IV(a)] and other monomers containing the group >CH = CH2.
