Abstract

Methacrylic acid-methyl a -methacrylate co-polymer is prepared by refluxing methacrylic acid, methyl a -methacrylate, ethyl alcohol, and benzoyl peroxide for 22 to 30 hours, precipitating the resin by pouring the reaction solution into cold water, washing, centrifuging, and drying. The diluted resin solution may be used as coatings for paper, glass, synthetic resins and cellulose esters without precipitation. Methacrylic acid-butyl a -methacrylate co-polymer is prepared by refluxing methacrylic acid, butyl a -methacrylate, absolute ethyl alcohol, and 30 per cent hydrogen peroxide for 19 hours, diluting with absolute alcohol, and precipitating the resin by pouring the whole solution into distilled water. Coating compositions comprise (a) methacrylic acid-methyl a -methacrylate resin, ethyl alcohol, the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol, and water, (b) methacrylic acid-methyl a -methacrylate resin, with or without methacrylic acid-butyl a -methacrylate resin, ethyl alcohol, the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol, Fuchsine Y, and (3-ethyl-2-benzoxazole)-(1 - ethyl - 2 : 5 - dimethyl - 3 - pyrrole) - dimethinecyanine iodide. The co-polymers may be made using other alkyl methacrylates, e.g. ethyl a -methacrylate. Ternary co-polymers may be made using mixtures of the alkyl a -methacrylates.
