Abstract

Vinyl compounds such as vinyl acetate, chloride or styrene, are polymerized in the presence of non-polymerized, non-oxidized drying oils in the absence of water. The polymerization may be effected by heat and/or actinic light in the presence or absence of a solvent and/or catalyst such as peroxides, ozone, ozonides and uranyl nitrate and the solvent if present may be removed by a process such as steam distillation. In examples (1) vinyl chloride and raw linseed oil dissolved in toluene are polymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide. (2) Styrene and alkali refined linseed oil are polymerized in solutions in ethyl benzene. (3) vinyl chloride, raw china wood oil, toluene and benzoyl peroxide are polymerized. (4) A spraying enamel concists of the resin of example 2, dixylylethane, a drier, "Titanox" pigment dissolved in a mixture of benzene, toluene and xylene. Anti-darkening agents, namely ethylene oxide, lead tetraethyl, lead triethylchloride and pyridine, may be added to the raw materials before polymerization.ALSO:Synthetic resins, prepared by polymerizing vinyl compounds in the presence of a non-polymerized and non-oxidized drying oil in the absence of water, are used in enamels. In an example the resin prepared by polymerizing styrene in the presence of alkali-refined linseed oil, dixylylethane, a drier and titanox pigment are dissolved in a mixture of benzene, toluene, and xylene to yield a spraying enamel.
