Abstract
545,324. Vinyl polymerization products. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., FLINT, R. B., and ROTHROCK, H. S. Oct. 18, 1940, No. 15425. [Class 2 (iii)] Synthetic resinous interpolymers are prepared by heating styrene with the product obtained by heat blending a frosting drying oil with a varnish gum or resin. The frosting drying oil may be China wood oil, oiticica oil or Japanese wood oil, or mixtures thereof with non-frosting drying or semi-drying oils, e.g: linseed, soya or castor oil. The varnish gum or resin may be any oil-soluble resin, natural or synthetic, e.g. rosin copals, oil-soluble phenol-formaldehyde resins, ester gums and phenol-modified ester gums, or coumarone-indene resins. Small proportions of other vinyl compounds, e.g. methyl methacrylate or methyl vinyl ketone may be incorporated with the styrene. The interpolymerization may be effected (a) with the aid of polymerization catalysts, e.g. organic peroxides such as benzoyl, acetyl and urea peroxides, ozone or stannic chloride, (b) in the presence of actinic light and (c) in the presence of inert solvents such as benzene, toluene or xylene. The interpolymers are soluble in dioxan, butyl acetate and in aromatic hydrocarbons, may be incorporated with plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate or dixylyl ethane or with pigments, and may be employed in the preparation of films, enamels and coating compositions. In examples, interpolymers are prepared by heating styrene in xylene solution and in the presence of benzoyl peroxide with a varnish prepared from China wood oil and (1) an oil-soluble rosin-modified phenol formaldehyde resin, (2) p-hydroxydiphenyl-formaldehyde resin ; (3) rosin and (4) p-tertiary amyl phenolformaldehyde resin. In example (5), the varnish comprises a mixture of linseed oil and the varnish of example (1), and in example (6) an enamel is prepared by grinding a mixture of titanium dioxide and antimony oxide with the interpolymer of example (1) in high flash solvent naphtha. Dixylylethane is prepared from xylene and acetylene in the presence of sulphuric acid and mercuric sulphate. Specification 516,344 is referred to.
