Abstract

Pieces of moulded methyl methacrylate resin are cemented together by applying a cement to the surfaces to be joined, whilst they are not more than 10 DEG C. below the "unmoulding temperature," the cement comprising a liquid which is a solvent for the resin at said temperature and having a boiling point above it, bringing the surfaces together and holding the pieces together whilst cooling them. The "unmoulding temperature" is the lowest temperature at which exposure of the piece of moulded resin, for a period long enough for it to be heated throughout, will cause distortion thereof. The term methyl methacrylate resin includes resins obtained by polymerization of methyl methacrylate alone or in admixture with a minor proportion of other polymerizable materials, e.g. other esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, vinyl esters, styrene; and also includes such resins having incorporated therein auxiliary ingredients, e.g. plasticisers, lubricants, colouring materials. The cement may also contain a thickener, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate or pyroxylin. Specified liquids for the cement are butyl lactate, xylene, methacrylic acid, cyclohexanone and benzyl alcohol. In examples, cements specified are (1) butyl lactfte with pyroxylin or polymethyl methacrylate; (2) xylene alone or with polymethyl methacrylate; (3) methacrylic acid alone or with polymethyl methacrylate; (4) cyclohexanone; and (5) benzyl alcohol alone or with polymethyl methacrylate. Examples are given of the cementing together of pieces of moulded resin consisting of (1) polymethyl methacrylate and a small proportion of (a) stearyl alcohol, or (b) dibutyl phthalate, and (2) a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and styrene with a small proportion of stearyl alcohol.
