Abstract
Artificial dentures are obtained by mixing styrene and powdered polymerized methyl methacrylate in suitable proportions to form a plastic mass, moulding the same to form the dentures and subsequently hardening by the application of heat. A mixture containing 20-40 per cent of styrene may be moulded below 100 DEG C. and hardened at about 100 DEG C. Hardening is effected in the presence of an accelerating agent which may be present in the polymerized methyl methacrylate or may be added. It is unnecessary to cover the mould with tinfoil. The material may be suitably coloured, e.g. by adding small quantities of titanium oxide and cadmium red. In an example, a mixture comprising, by weight, 20 parts powdered polymerized methyl methacrylate, 7 parts styrene, 0,1 parts titanium oxide and 0,03 parts cadmium red, together with 0,08 parts benzoyl peroxide, is placed between the two halves of a flask containing the plaster mould which is then closed in a screw press and immersed in boiling water for 30-40 minutes.
