Abstract
A synthetic resin moulding mixture is hardened by polymerization, polyaddition or polycondensation in contact with a moulding surface and a gas is released into the resin mass during hardening to prevent shrinkage; the density of the resultant resin being substantially unaffected by the gas. The mixture preferably comprises a polymerizable liquid monomer and a macromolecular compound which is dissolved in the monomer or is soluble or swellable therein. In one example 70 gms. of pearly polymethylmethacrylate, 15 gms. of kaolin, 15 gms. of a copolymer derived from methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid, 0,3 gms. of sodium bicarbonate and 0,1 gms. of benzoyl peroxide are stirred with 40 gms. of methyl methacrylate, 10 gms. butyl methacrylate, 18 gms. water, 2 gms. of sodium oleate, and 0,25 gms. dimethylaniline, and 120 gms. of polyethylene granules are added to the resultant mixture as a filler. The gas may alternatively be produced by the decomposition of an azo compound in the moulding mixture.ALSO:A synthetic resin mixture is cast in a mould or moulded on a former and a gas is introduced into the resin mass during hardening to prevent shrinkage; the density of the resulting resin being substantially unchanged. The casting composition which is hardened by polymerisation, polyaddition or polycondensation comprises in one instance a polymerisable liquid monomer such as methyl methacrylate or vinylacetate and a macromolecular compound such as polymethylmethacrylate which is dissolved in the monomer or is soluble or swellable therein. In one example a hollow mould is filled with a mixture comprising polymethylmethacrylate, methyl methacrylate, sodium bicarbonate and an acid to liberate carbon dioxide, and fillers &c. such as polyethylene. The polymerisation is completed in twenty minutes and the shrinkage is stated to be only 0-1%. Polyvinyl chloride or polystyrene may be used as macromolecular substance and styrene or a nitrile of acrylic or methacrylic acid may be used as the liquid monomer. The gas may be produced by the decomposition of an azo compound in the moulding mixture.
