Abstract

Solid organic polymers, prepared by the interpolymerisation of a compound containing only one CH2=CH-group with a minor proportion of a compound containing a plurality of CH2=CH-groups, are coated with a solution comprising an acid polysilicic acid ester and a hydroxyl-containing polymer. Specified copolymers, which are preferably transparent, are those of methyl methacrylate or styrene with methacrylic anhydride, preferably containing less than 7 per cent. of the anhydride, and the specified hydroxyl-containing polymers are polyvinyl alcohol, partial polyvinyl acetates and cellulose esters and ethers. Volatile solvents may also be present It is preferred that the solution contains at least 20 per cent. of its weight of either ethyl, propyl or butyl alcohol, while 1 to 50 per cent. of carboxylic acid containing 2 to 5 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g., acetic acid, may be present. The preparation of the esters is described (see Group IV). After coating, the material is baked and cooled. The material may be used for enclosing galvanometers, voltmeters and aircraft instruments. Specification 581,751 is referred to.ALSO:Solid organic polymers, prepared by the interpolymerization of a compound containing only one CH2=CH-group with a minor proportion of a compound containing a plurality of CH2=CH- groups, are coated with a solution comprising an acid polysilicic acid ester and a hydroxyl-containing polymer. Specified copolymers, which are preferably transparent, are those of methyl methacrylate or styrene with methacrylic anhydride preferably containing less than 7 per cent of the anhydride, and the specified hydroxyl-containing polymers are polyvinyl alcohol, partial polyvinyl acetals and cellulose esters and ethers. Volatile solvents may also be present. It is preferred that the solution contains at least 20 per cent of its weight of either ethyl, propyl or butyl alcohol, while 1 to 50 per cent of a carboxylic acid containing 2-5 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. acetic acid, may be present. The acid esters may be prepared by acidifying an aqueous sodium silicate, contacting with an esterifying agent and removing water, e.g. tetraethylsilicate is hydrolysed and polymerized by stirring with ethanol and hydrochloric acid. The alcohol from which the ester is formed may be primary, secondary or tertiary, aliphatic, aromatic, cyclic alicyclic, mono or polyhydric, saturated, unsaturated and straight or branch chain. Preferred alcohols boil below 120 DEG C. After coating, the material is baked and cooled and may be used for enclosing voltmeters, galvanometers and aircraft instruments. Specification 581,751 is referred to.
