Abstract
Monomeric methacrylic acid esters are manufactured by heating one or more polymethacrylic acid esters, or one or more mixed polymers of one or more methacrylic acid esters with one or more other polymerizable substances or of two or more of the said esters, to about 250--300 DEG C., advantageously in the presence of inert substances, e.g. sand, barium sulphate or heavy spar, or of substances having an alkaline reaction, e.g. sodium carbonate or chalk, or, with reduced yield, in the presence of oxygen or of stabilizing agents. The monomeric compounds can be reconverted into the polymeric form, e.g. by the action of peroxides. Examples describe the treatment, in the presence of sand, of: (1) polymeric methyl methacrylate; (2) polymeric ethyl methacrylate; (3) a mixed polymer of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate.
