Abstract

The esterification product of a polymerizable alpha-beta unsaturated carboxylic acid and a polyglycol monoalkyl ether is polymerized in bulk with or without one or more copolymerizable vinyl compounds in the presence of a redox polymerization catalyst. The polymerizable mix may also include preformed polymers, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, dyes and fillers such as titanium, zirconium or zinc oxide. The esterification product may be the methacrylate of diglycol monomethyl ether, or of polyglycol monomethyl ether made by reacting ethylene oxide with diglycol monomethyl ether in the presence of metallic sodium and esterifying the product with methacrylic acid. Copolymerizable compounds mentioned are bis-diglycol monomethyl ether maleinate, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids. The catalyst may be a mixture of tributylamine, or p-toluene sulphinic acid with benzoyl peroxide. The process may be used in dental prosthesis.
