Abstract

584,623. Making turbine blades. ARON, H. Jan. 11, 1945, No. 943. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Streching ; forging ; dies.-A method of forging turbine blades having enlargements at one or both ends from a blank having a cross-section substantially equal to that of the enlargements comprises heating the central portion of the blank by clamping its ends between electrodes and passing a current therethrough and subjecting the intermediate portion to a limited stretching operation so as to reduce its cross-section and then reheating the blank and bringing it to final shape between dropforging dies. The blank 23 is clamped at its ends between electrodes 24, 25 and 26, 27 and stretched to form a central reduced portion 28 as shown in Fig. 3. In a modification, Fig. 4, a double length blank is clamped at the centre also in electrodes 34, 35 and stretched to form two reduced portions 40, 41. The blank is then cut in half to form two blanks for the final drop-forging operation between dies 29, 30 shown in Fig. 5. If a blade having an enlargement at one end only is required, the stretched blank would be cut in the centre of the stretched portion to form two blade blanks.
